Skating Rings Around Ugly

Monday, October 30th, 2006

Darren McCarty is apparently in bankruptcy, which means all of his (valuable) worldly possessions are up for auction. After looking things over, I’ve come to a conclusion: Stanley Cup Rings are SUPER DUPER ugly!

MSU = Disgrace

Saturday, October 28th, 2006

I was prepared to post this last week, but the miraculous comeback postponed my rant.

Michigan State’s football team is a complete disgrace. 11:21 left in the 4th QTR and they are losing to Indiana 46 – 7. INDIANA. I’m sick and tired of hearing all of this Drew Stanton 1st round pick nonsense too. 1st round QB’s don’t put up a 9-21, 95 YDS, 1 TD, 1 INT line against INDIANA. The collapse started with the Notre Dame debacle, where they completely blew their lead and lost that game. Then they barely squeak past Northwestern by engineering the biggest Division 1-A comeback in NCAA history. A coach worth his salt would have built on that and used it as a turning point for the season. John L. Smith is apparently not worth any salt at all.

MSU has always been a super inconsistent team, no matter who their coach has been. Even under the “great” Nick Saban, they were 34 – 24 – 1. But this season is just a disaster. There is a ton of talent on that team, especially at the skill positions. A good coach tries to put his athletes in the best position to succeed. It seems like John L. Smith just tries to put his players in the best position to collapse, which they then proceed to do. It is natural for a team to take a conference weak sister a little lightly, and maybe that weak sister makes a game out of it. But the good teams are able to overcome the malaise and win. Michigan State is not a good team.

But you know what? Even losing to Indiana wouldn’t be so terrible so long as the game were close and the players played hard. But this is a laugher, and John L. Smith, we are laughing AT you.

Pathetic.

Baker interested in A’s, Giants, but doesn’t have plan

If the A’s hire Dusty Baker, I may have to dissolve my attachment to them for a little while. “Captain Tax Evasion” is one of the most clueless guys to ever sit in the dugout, and after watching him screw up the Cubs for the last few years I don’t want him anywhere near the A’s. He excels in being a “players” coach, protecting them from negative stuff and getting a little more out of guys, kind of like Bobby Cox does (though he is nowhere near as good as Bobby.) The A’s don’t need a guy to get them to play, they do that well enough on their own. They don’t need a “red ass” to come in there to fire them up either. I think both Art Howe and Ken Macha were fine guys to run the ship. Sometimes when you get to the playoffs, it just doesn’t work. That isn’t always the manager’s fault, even though they often get the axe for it.

What the A’s need is a guy who understands how that organization is run. There will be turnover every year. There will be young pitching. There will be growing pains with some young players. None of those things play to Dusty’s strengths. If Dusty got a hold of the A’s rotation, they’d be getting a volume discount on Tommy John surgeries from Dr. Andrews.

My choice would probably be Ron Washington, the A’s current 3rd base coach. The players all love him, and he is certainly familiar with how the organization is run. I’d at least like to see him get some consideration.

Catching Up

Monday, October 16th, 2006

- Yay! The A’s made it past the first round of the playoffs. Aaaaaand promptly get swept. Bye-bye Ken Macha.

- Let’s all listen to Lamar Thomas make a complete ass of himself while talking about the criminal activities of Miami and FIU. “I say, why don’t they just meet outside in the tunnel after the ballgame and get it on some more.” Scuttlebutt is that he is going to be fired, and I say they cannot make that move fast enough. I was listening to the Dan Patrick show today, and even Michael Irvin, the biggest Miami apologist in history, said that Thomas should be fired.

Contrite Titan Haynesworth sorry for kicking opponent

“What I did was disgusting, It’s something that should never happen. I mean, I’m not a dirty player. I don’t play dirty. I have respect for the game. What I feel like is I disgraced the game, disgraced my team and disgraced my last name.”

I’ll have no respect for Roger Goodell if this guy gets anything less than a 4-game suspension. Irony of the day? I was listening to the Titans radio pre-game show, and they had a big piece on Haynesworth and the fact that he had matured so much since coming into the league and how he was becoming a leader on the team. Interviews from players and staff, all hailing his newfound maturity.

That didn’t last long.
