Joey Theismann, Canada’s Spokesman
Joe Theismann goes on ESPN radio to weigh in on Ricky Williams and his upcoming year in the CFL:
I don’t ever want to be mentioned in the same breath as Ricky Williams as a football player. He’s a disgrace to the game. The man doesn’t deserve to play football. He should go on with his life and treat his drug addictions or go do whatever he wants to do. He’s been suspended from the NFL on multiple occasions. Doesn’t anybody have any class anywhere?
You are right Joey. Let’s completely run a guy with diagnosed social anxieties out of football. Because he likes to smoke weed. What a crime. Theismann also said that he was “embarrassed now to be a Toronto Argonaut.” What? Theismann played with Dexter Manley? I guess that was OK because what are four failed drug tests and a jail sentence for cocaine possession between friends when that friend is helping you win and play in Super Bowls? But what about now? Current Redskin Sean Taylor is going to trial for for aggravated assault with a firearm. Former Redskin Timmy Smith just got sentenced to 2 1/2 years for conspiracy to distribute cocaine. Yet during all this, I don’t see Theismann coming out and saying that he is embarrassed to be a Washington Redskin. Why not? What is the difference. In for a pound and all that…
To Theismann I say this: Shut up. Shut your damn mouth. They hypocritical BS you are spewing makes me want to vomit. Just shut the hell up.
Is Ricky guilty of some of the things that Theismann says? Most certainly he is. But unlike Joey, Ricky Williams is a likeable guy. He always seems so earnest, like he wants to do the right thing all the time, yet somehow keeps getting himself into trouble. I have gotten the sense from watching Ricky over the years that he still has some mental problems that haven’t been completely addressed. But even with all that, he still broke the rules and deserves the consequences of doing so. Consequences he is now facing with very little bitching and whining I might add.
I am aware that marijuana is an illegal substance and banned by the NFL, I can’t help but have sympathy for a guy with social anxiety using it. At least he has some semblance of a legitimate excuse for his behavior. I don’t know what Theismann’s excuse for being an ass is.

Hah – more on the hypocritcal front!

JT’s own son busted for Crack Cocaine possession.
Also, Ricky’s openly admitted to using Marijuana. He claims that the latest failed test was not due to abuse, but some medication. I believe him.
Joe is a dumbass.

Nice catch, I had totally forgotten about that one. I guess Jr. is OK so long as he doesn’t want to play in the CFL.
June 1st, 2006 at 9:50 pm
Jr is probably the reason he’s reacting so strongly.
Obviously I don’t have a big problem with smoking a little ganja, a lot of my friends do. But when you let it get in the way of your job, and like in Ricky’s case, other peoples jobs (teamates) (04 season; Ricky wants to hit bongs with Lenny more than he wants to honor his contract, or do HIS JOB) I just have no respect whatsoever for you.
Fuck Ricky. He’s had more than enough chances. He always comes back with the same poor-me excuses, but in the end does the same damn thing and lets everyone around him down, AGAIN.
He’s not good enough to be a Redskin.
JT is over reacting. Maybe his ring is putting toxins in his bloodstream. You know his SUPER BOWL RING that Ricky was never motivated enough to go out and get. Irvin, Manley, all those guys loved the coke, but you know what, they still showed up for work, did their frigging job the best they could, and didn’t let down their whole team.
Ricky can go into the Annals of the NFL with Barry Sanders, the Buffalo Bills and all the other “not quite good enough” entries.
June 1st, 2006 at 10:11 pm
Oh no. No no no no no no. You did not just implicate Barry Sanders as “not quite good enough.”
Barry Sanders was one of the best players in the NFL for his entire career. His career with the Lions. A team that employed Wayne Fontes for NINE years.
I refuse to accept the “player isn’t good enough if he doesn’t win it all” argument for players that participate in a TEAM sport. If you wanna say that Andy Roddick can’t get it done, or that Colin Montgomerie is a choke artist then fine. But don’t say that guys like Charles Barkley, Barry Sanders, Dan Marino, Dominique Wilkins, etc. weren’t good enough. That is just crap.
June 1st, 2006 at 10:24 pm
Barry could have a ring right now. He quit.
not quite good enough.
June 1st, 2006 at 10:32 pm
Explain to me how he could have a ring right now. He sure as hell wasn’t going to win one with the Lions…
Let me say this again: TEAM sport.
June 1st, 2006 at 10:33 pm
See with me it’s the way Barry went out. Correct me if I’m wrong here on my memory, but didn’t his dad inform the world that Barry didn’t want to play any more?
Barkley, Marino, Wilkins.. hey they left it all on the field / court. They went as long as they could, and just never got the glory. Barry let down his team, while he still presumably had plenty left. He wouldn’t even stay around as trade bait.
The reason I lump Barry in with Ricky has nothing to do with Skills. Barry had the skills and then some. Barry on an Elite team (not in the Siberia of the NFL) was ring, ring, ring.. But dude gave up. He said, my team sucks, I’m never getting out, I quit.
Perhaps it’s not a fair comparison. Perhaps I shouldn’t say he wasn’t good enough. He’s just one of those that frustrates me because he had it all, and didn’t seem to care that much about.
Much like another RB who this conversation started with.

BTW, none of this changes that fact that Joe Theismann is a grade A, #1, top of the charts asshole. And one of the worst color commentators in the business. Better than Paul Mcguire and Dan Dierdorf, but that’s about it.
June 1st, 2006 at 10:38 pm
But JT can’t hear you past the ring in his ear…
don’t you know that all 80′s Redskins are infallible? When will you ever learn?
June 1st, 2006 at 10:40 pm
No one really knows why he quit. Maybe he got tired of the losing, maybe he wanted to be able to walk when he was 40, maybe a space alien zapped his brain and told him to. I don’t see how that matters. That doesn’t make him not good enough. It makes him a guy that didn’t want to play anymore.
And don’t you dare say that Barry let the LIONS down. That is a two-way street, and they screwed him out of any chance of winning with their constant refusal to spend money or hire competant personel for the front office or the field.
June 1st, 2006 at 10:44 pm
I remember a certain throw he made in the 2nd quarter of Super Bowl XVIII that was pretty darn fallible. Made a star out of Jack Squirek. And his leg certainly wasn’t infallible–LT saw to that.
June 1st, 2006 at 10:47 pm
They had some good linebackers one year. They had a good team one year until they ran into the Skins in the Playoffs.. (had to get that in).
And I couldn’t figure out any other place to say these two things:
1. Ok, what stadium is that at the home page. I can’t read the signage well enough to figure it out, and it’s really, really frigging bothering me. There are some Bills colors on the sidelines, but you don’t like them.
2. The google adds, which i just noticed are cracking me up. Did you make them all be Ricky and Drug Test ads? Nice touch.
June 1st, 2006 at 10:49 pm
Dude, you need to watch for lightning talking about the Skins in such a manner. You better not start busting on Art, your home will implode.
June 1st, 2006 at 10:57 pm
Stadium pic is of The Coliseum in Nashville. I stole it from a stock photo group on Flickr.
I have nothing to do with the Google ads. They are “contextual” and figure themselves out. And yes, they can often be quite hilarious.
And to end the Barry Sanders / Lions argument once and for all…here is a list of the QB’s that he played with during his career:
Bob Gagliano
Rodney Peete
Andre Ware
Erik Kramer
Dave Krieg (in his 15th season)
Scott Mitchell
Don Majkowski
Charlie Batch
June 2nd, 2006 at 8:35 am
and what is wrong with Don “Magic” Majkowski?
I think it’s more of a Mouse Davis issue than QB.
June 2nd, 2006 at 8:42 am
We are in complete agreement on Mouse Davis.
What is wrong with Majkowski? How about his career numbers:
Comp Att PCT YD Y/A TD INT
1056 1905 55.4 12700 6.7 66 67
June 3rd, 2006 at 7:13 pm
uh oh, he’s magic..
Didn’t he have the big time right before Brett in GB? Ah yes, he did. That was when I once loved him.
Then he went to Siberia.

[...] Ricky Williams played in his first CFL game on Friday. It seems the Argonauts feel differently about Ricky than Joe Theismann does: On Tuesday, Theismann called the move a “feeble excuse” by Toronto to sell tickets, lashed out at Williams and said he was ashamed to have worn the club’s old A emblem on his helmet. [...]
